The Peace Pole Project began in 1955
with the mission to spread the
prayer "May Peace Prevail on Earth" which is written on each side of the
pole in a different language. Since 1955 over 200,000 poles have been
planted in over 180 countries around the world!
As part
of our 20th anniversary year, FMS added to this cause and plant a
Peace Pole at Casa San Salvador in Washington, DC, on August 28, 2010.
Participants in the ceremony were invited to share their prayers for peace and "plant" them in our newly blessed Peace Garden. The prayers are listed below.
May peace prevail on Earth through…
- Our daily actions.
- Our commitment to love one another as Christ loves us.
- Justice and respect for human rights.
- Remembering the dream that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
proclaimed 47 years ago- and remembering that peace is not just the absence of
war, but comes forth through justice on earth.
- Our taking the time to listen to others who differ from us.
- Prayer and hard work.
- The witness of humble Franciscans.
- Acceptance, tolerance, and understanding of all people.
- The witness of FMS missioners throughout the world.
- Love, hope, and humility.
- Continued dialogue among differing political, religious,
and cultural views and peoples.
- Daily rosary.
- Our efforts together as sisters and brothers.
I Pray I can be peace in the world by…
- Learning how to love more deeply everyday.
- Being a friendly face to all.
- Upholding the dignity of every
individual through respect and love, by sewing with a heart full of love.
- Inspiring my students to live
peaceful lives.
- LOVE.
- Remembering to remain in the
present by being fully present to the task at hand.
- Appreciating and spreading
God’s beauty. (our world)
- Accepting, loving, and
receiving in words and actions everyone and everything in creation, without
fear, judgment, or condemnation. Seeing God in all!
- Being a witness and living in
simplicity with those that we mission to.
- Having American troops leave
the Middle East.
- Modeling nonviolent behavior.
- Restraint of pen and tongue
and being cautious and kind in everything I say.
My dream for peace is…
- Rather than see each other’s
differences, we’ll see each other for the commonalities that thread us together.
- That children everywhere will
learn love and unity at their parent’s knees…and know that all the children of
the world are their brothers and sisters.
- That everyone in the world be
at peace with their enemies, families, and themselves.
- That people will give more of
themselves and their gifts to help others in their communities throughout the world.
