Rise Up: Learning Together, Becoming Free
On May 5, Franciscan Mission Service celebrated its annual World Care Benefit.
Keynote speaker was Sr. Margaret Carney. OFS, president emeritus of St. Bonaventure University (2004-2016). She holds master’s degrees from Duquesne University (theology) and St. Bonaventure University (Franciscan Studies) and a doctorate (theology) from the Franciscan university of Rome.
Mary Grace Donohoe, the 2017 recipient of the San Damiano Student Leadership Award, attended the World Care Benefit Celebration, where she received her $500 scholarship. Read more about this young leader formed in the Franciscan tradition.
Honorees were Sr. Damon Nolan, MFIC, Sr. Jean Morissey, MFIC, and Sr. Chris Cullen, MFIC for their outstanding contributions to the Unidad Académica Campesina-Carmen Pampa, the only institution of higher learning in Bolivia’s Yungas mountain region. Sr. Damon co-founded the school in 1999, and she and other Franciscan sisters have been instrumental in the success of the university, which not only offers a range of professional degrees but also keeps that learning in the community.
