A Poem for World Day of Migrants and Refugees by Kim Wagner

Editor’s Note: Lay missioner Kim Wagner recognized World Day of Migrants and Refugees on Sunday, September 29, 2024. She wrote this poem as she reflected on what she learned from serving at Annunciation House.

As I watch the children laughing and screaming with joy run past me, I faintly hear the women staying with Annunciation House praying the Rosary in the Chapel — and I remember.

I remember different stories of migration:

From the Book of Exodus;

From the Book of Joshua;

From the Book of Matthew — Jesus’ family fleeing to Egypt;

From the families that arrive at Annunciation House in need of hospitality;

And think to myself: In every time and place, God never abandons his people.

When my oftentimes short period of accompaniment with the people seeking refugee with Annunciation House comes to an end, I remember that God is with them and within them throughout their journey.

Just as He has been from the beginning.

Just as He is with and within us all in our migration journey to Heaven.

Question for Reflection: How has your understanding of migration deepened or evolved over time?
