The Puzzle Pieces of Life
Editor’s Note: DC Service Corps volunteer Claire Schwalb reflects on how she and her DCSC community are called to share Christ’s love through serving at their ministry sites.
Every day on my walk to work, I give myself silent time to reflect before I fully begin my day. One subject that has been at the forefront of my mind during these peaceful mornings is the teachings of Saint Therese of Lisieux and how it pertains to my mission.
She says, “What matters in life is not great deeds, but great love. ”
We are all called to bring Christ to the world, and we are all a part of a beautiful puzzle. Each person on this earth was created as a unique child of God with different gifts, different talents, and a different way to share Christ’s love. My time in DC Service Corps so far has shown me how each of us brings so much love and our gifts in the little things we do each and every day.
My mission site is at Christ House, I am a respite care assistant. My responsibilities as a respite care assistant include taking care of patients day to day needs, assisting with wound care, doing physical therapy exercises with patients, doing laundry, and anything else that may come about during the day. I absolutely love it.
Brigid and Sam are our Little Friends for Peace. They assist in the day-to-day operations of Little Friends for Peace, teaching people tools of peace so they can develop peace in themselves. They love it.
Claire Bosch and David are our friends in the Franciscan Mission Service office. They help with fundraising for FMS, and they work on formation and program logistics for the Lay mission program and DC Service Corps. They are continuing the mission, and they love it.
Claire Fisher works in the Franciscan Action Network office. She plans conferences, she engages with the nation to promote Franciscan values, and she helps advocate for positive change in this world. She loves it.
We are all engaging in bringing Christ to the world in such different, beautiful, and equally important ways. We need to have people caring for the sick, sharing the Peace of Christ, sharing testimonies and experiences, and sustaining the mission for the world to see.
We have each been called to this mission from all walks of life and bring our unique gifts and talents to our community with the love that Christ has shown us. When we use our love from Christ and come together with our gifts, we create a beautiful work of art that is truly the definition of changing the world.
Question for Reflection: Where has God called you to bring Christ to the world through service?
