My Perfect February Saturday in DC

My Perfect February Saturday in DC

Editor’s Note: DC Service Corps volunteer Claire Schwalb shares the events of a fun Saturday in Washington, DC.

57°. Light breeze. Tulip bulbs are starting to peek through the soil. The sun is shining. Enough cloudy coverage to give a break from the sun occasionally. UV 8.

I sleep in, last night was a long night, we had a lot to catch up on so we stayed up chatting. I wake up at 7:30. I left my blinds open so I could wake up with the sun. I read my daily Bible verse, say thank you to the Lord for this beautiful day, brush my teeth, and I’m ready to roll.

I run into Claire Bosch in the hallway. She’s getting ready to run, I am also supposed to be getting ready to run, but both of us fall into the spirit of procrastination… I give Bosch a challenge to finish her water bottle before she leaves my room, and I accidentally start deep cleaning my room.

We go downstairs to stretch together and grab a bite before we go our separate ways. Claire Fisher, Claire Bosch, Sam, Brigid, and I all sit in the kitchen chatting, stretching, and lingering just a little bit longer than we need to before we begin the rest of our day.

Brigid and I leave for our run around 11:30, we haven’t run in a few weeks so we’re taking it nice and easy. Running with someone makes it so much more fun. We run from Casa San Salvador to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History where we are planning to meet up with Bosch, Brigid and I crush it.

We hop on the metro at the national mall to meet up with Claire Fisher and our friend Renee for a coffee. It was a little bit of a trek, our legs are a little tired, but the sun is shining and I’m excited.

The coffee shop was crowded. It was a Saturday. It makes sense. We finally found a table that fit the five of us, but then we decide to sit outside. There are only four chairs, so we take turns sitting on the ground. After this long winter, it is so nice to sit basking in the sun with such great company.

We walk to a new metro stop. We sit at some tables before we need to go our separate ways. Sister Marie and Sister Maria just happened to be in the same place at the same time. We flag them down and chat with them for a while. DC is a very small city!

Brigid and I go to mass at Saint Matthews Cathedral for Saturday vigil. We got there early; confession, time with God, and a beautiful church… What more can you ask for?

Itinerary for the night: dinner run, dance moms, and early bedtime so I can be well rested for Christ House in the morning.

This was my perfect teaser of spring Saturday. The coldness of this winter, the snow, the dark clouds all had a brief intermission that allowed for the streets and parks to be full of people sharing beautiful moments together.

My heart is full.

Question for Reflection: How would you describe your perfect Saturday?

My name is Claire Schwalb and I am from Saint Louis Missouri! I went to Missouri State University where I graduated with my Bachelors in Kinesiology. I will be working at Christ House as a Medical Assistant! I love to read, be outdoors in any way I can, and rewatching my favorite sitcoms.
