Editor’s Note: On the fourth day of our Advent blog series, “Following the Holy Family in Solidarity,” DC Service Corps volunteer Grant Diego describes what solidarity entails in an intentional community.
In today’s world, where individualism often takes center stage, the concept of solidarity in community living serves as a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from community.
Solidarity is about standing together, supporting one another, and understanding that our lives are deeply intertwined. It’s not just about helping out when things get rough or go wrong, but creating an ongoing sense of shared purpose and responsibility.
In a community, solidarity is the glue that binds people together, offering a safe space where everyone can thrive. The foundation of solidarity lies in mutual support, where individuals help each other without expecting something in return, knowing that the well-being of one contributes to the well-being of all. This kind of mutual aid can take many forms, from sharing things like food, or simply being there in times of crisis. In many community living situations, there is a collective sense of responsibility. People understand that they are not isolated but part of something bigger, and when one person struggles, the entire community rallies to help. Similarly, when one succeeds, everyone celebrates. In communities that prioritize shared resources, economic and social disparities become less pronounced. Everyone contributes and benefits, and this shared model of living promotes fairness and equality.
However, solidarity in community living isn’t without its challenges. It requires trust, open communication, and a willingness to compromise. Conflicts are inevitable, but in communities built on solidarity, these conflicts are addressed with the goal of mutual well-being in mind. Instead of focusing on differences, people are encouraged to find common ground and work together toward solutions that benefit everyone.
Ultimately, solidarity in community living is about creating spaces where individuals can support one another, build lasting relationships, and grow together. In a world often marked by division and disconnection, solidarity offers a model for how we can live more meaningfully and harmoniously, showing us that when we stand together, we are stronger. By embracing mutual support, shared responsibility, and equality, community living offers a practical way to build better lives for individuals and stronger, more connected communities.
Question for Reflection: How does your community embody a spirit of solidarity?
