Encountering God in the Goodness of Others

Cecilia and Tim Marcy spent the last three years serving at a hospice and clinic for people with AIDS. Today, Cecilia shares with us the story of one patient through whom she encountered God this year.

There was a patient at the St. Francis Care Center who had AIDS and cancer. She was a wonderful influence on other patients, the staff, and myself. She was a determined person who sought to overcome her difficulties as they arose. She was very tuned in to other people and what they were experiencing.

She loved to attend our church services, and she encouraged other patients to also come to church, even though she was a Muslim. She knew many of the native and English church songs. Her goodness shone from her. When she died, many were sad.

The Marcys have gone on mission twice with FMS. From 2004 to 2006, they served at the San Pedro Parish Medical Clinic in Sacaba, Bolivia where Cecilia was a nurse and Tim was a pharmacist and worked with children.

From 2009 to 2012 they served at the St. Francis Care Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. Tim worked in the center’s outpatient facility and ministered to the homebound.
Cecilia worked as a nurse at the hospice for patients with HIV or AIDS.
