Prayer For Those Who Are Suffering

Editor’s Note: As we journey through the sacred season of Lent, our staff, Overseas Lay Missioners, and DC Service Corps volunteers will be compiling a Lenten Litany, each writing a one-line prayer close to their hearts. Estephanie Alvarez is a high school student who works in the FMS office once a week as part of Don Bosco Cristo Rey’s Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). Today, she shares a prayer for those who are suffering along with a reflection.

Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Christ, hear us.
Christ, graciously hear us.

When those around me are suffering in any way, may they be blessed and know God is present with them. Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.

May we see and know You are present with us in new ways this Lenten season … in creation, in community, in our hearts. Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free

May we be able to experience your unconditional love and mercy during this sacred season of Lent. Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.

When our thoughts, actions, inactions, policies, and institutions perpetuate racism and discrimination, let us remember Jesus calls us to radical love and liberation. Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.

That we may be detached from the things of this world in striving for the things that truly matter. Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.

Through Your light and love, we may find comfort and resilience. Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.

When I fall into fear and grief instead of embracing Your everlasting love and trusting in the goodness You bring. Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.

When we don’t give ourselves the grace that Christ has bought for us. Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.

When I doubt Your desire to heal and restore me. Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.

May our prayers, and those from around the world, for peace in Ukraine be heard and manifested through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.

Light the path of the migrants in the desert, keeping them from harm. Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free

When we create something like a Lenten prayer, we are truly understanding what type of blessing we have from God and how much we need him as our Lord and Savior. When we start the prayer, we ask God about a certain situation with ourselves or anyone in need. In response, we then ask the Lord to listen and help us to be able to deal with this certain issue and continue the day with hope. This is a way for us as Catholics to find comfort in the Lord and gives us a chance to communicate with Him. I did not know of this prayer until now, but I feel it is something that we must and should do everyday so we can begin and end our days asking for God’s guidance and help.
