Quiet Spots by Tai Ha

Editor’s Note: DC Service Corps volunteer Tai Ha shares what he loves about some of his favorite peaceful places in Washington, DC.

There have been many times during my year in DCSC during which I feel overworked, stressed, and quite burnt out. Perhaps there’s a lot going on at work, perhaps community life feels like a burden, or perhaps I’m not getting enough sleep. Unfortunately, this can bleed into my ministry work at the clinic. I’m more negative, lazy, and rude to the patients. The work gets done, but it’s not done with the kind of care and attention that people deserve. Whenever I get to that point in my life, I tend to retreat to my quiet spots around the city. It’s a good way to escape from the Casa, from work, from my normal routine. Here are some of my favorite spots.

The Casa porch: My favorite spot when I first arrived at the casa, and still my favorite spot to this day. There’s something so relaxing about being able to people-watch from the comforts of your own home. I’ve watched movies, ate meals with friends, and had long conversations with people out there. It might be the thing I’ll miss the most about DC.

Waldorf Astoria hotel lobby: Recently discovered during a trip to the old post office tower, it has since become my favorite reading spot. It’s a massive lobby fitted with beautiful decorations and comfy seats. There is a harp player playing covers of songs there that just ties the atmosphere together.

Bishop’s Garden: These gardens have a good mix of things for nature lovers, with the beautiful flowers, trails, and large green spaces. On my days off, I’ll grab a picnic blanket and a packed lunch and lounge around all day. Pending decent weather, it’s a lovely spot to take a nap as well.

I always look forward to going to these places. It allows me to take care of my body and provides a mental reset. I’m not a meditative person, but I appreciate time to be alone with my thoughts, or even time for the lack of any thoughts. So for anyone needing some peace and solitude, I’d recommend these quiet spots.

Question for Reflection: Where are your favorite quiet spots?
